Pioneer News Group purchasing Kuna Melba News

April 27, 2016

KUNA – Pioneer News Group, parent company of the Idaho Press-Tribune, is in the process of purchasing the Kuna Melba News, a weekly newspaper in Kuna.

Pioneer is purchasing the paper from RIM Publications, a Seattle-based company that has owned the Kuna Melba News since 2011.

“Adding the Kuna Melba News to Pioneer’s family of local community newspapers is extremely exciting,” said Idaho Press-Tribune President and Publisher Matt Davison. “We see enormous potential to provide top-notch local journalism to the communities of Kuna and Melba for many, many years to come. Communities deserve a local newspaper that they can be proud of, and we hope that the residents of Kuna and Melba will embrace this change in ownership.”

Once finalized, expected by the end of this week, the purchase of the Kuna Melba News marks the third weekly newspaper under the ownership of Pioneer News Group in the Treasure Valley. Pioneer also owns the Emmett Messenger-Index and the Meridian Press. Adding the Kuna Melba News continues to expand Pioneer’s media footprint in the Treasure Valley and Idaho.

The purchase of the Kuna Melba News also brings Scott McIntosh back to the masthead of the newspaper. McIntosh, editor of the Idaho Press-Tribune, will also become the editor of the Kuna Melba News, a newspaper that he owned from 2006-2011.

“Of course, the Kuna Melba News is near and dear to my heart,” McIntosh said. “Owning the Kuna Melba News was a labor of love for me for those five years, and I am excited for the opportunity to bring it back to the award-winning newspaper it once was.”

The Kuna Melba News will be a publication of the Idaho Press-Tribune and will be distributed each week to its current subscribers and over the counter at several locations in Kuna and Melba.

The weekly newspaper will have a full online component and a full suite of social media components, as well.
Starting with next week’s issue, readers will see a bold new design for the paper, a new, larger, broadsheet page format and increased news coverage of city government, schools, businesses and the community. More improvements and increased coverage are planned for the future.

Danielle Wiley, who has been a reporter for the Idaho Press-Tribune for the past year, will be the primary reporter for the Kuna Melba News. She will be based in the current Kuna office, which will remain at 326 Avenue D, Kuna.
General manager Steve Howard will handle the sale of advertising, and current Kuna Melba News office manager and sales representative Karri Keller will continue in her current position.

The Kuna Melba News began publication in 1982 as an independent weekly newspaper. After changing hands a couple of times, the paper was purchased by Earl and Suzi Maggard in 1992. The Maggards ran the paper for 14 years, until 2006, when they sold it to Scott and Nicola McIntosh, who owned it until selling it to RIM in 2011.
