In 1981, Cheryl and Mike Carey moved to Klamath Falls to start up the Nickel. This young couple had been working for the Pendleton Nickel, which belonged to a group of Nickel offices that included Tri-Cities, Redding and Medford. Cheryl was in charge of the office and sales while Mike did the graphics and helped deliver The Nickel, which was printed at the Ashland daily paper. The first copies of the Nickel were 8-12 pages and color pages were limited to one-color on color pages.

The publication was sold to Pioneer in 2002. Today, the 17,000 circulation, 40-page+ Nickel publishes weekly and is distributed in a large geographic area in Klamath, Lake, Modoc and Siskiyou counties in southern Oregon and northern California.
