The town of Anacortes was established in 1879 and quickly became a regional lumber and fishing center. The current population is 16,000. The town is a popular destination for boaters and those traveling to the San Juan Islands. Two of five oil refineries in Washington are located nearby. The local economy is boosted by yacht construction, tourism and varied services provide for nearby Whidbey Island Naval air station.
The Anacortes American remains the only newspaper focusing exclusively on the greater Anacortes, Wash., community. This weekly newspaper was founded in 1890. This subscriber-based newspaper is produced in a newsroom in Anacortes and printed at the Skagit Publishing facility in nearby Mount Vernon, Wash.
This total-market-coverage publication was converted in 2014 into a supplement for the Anacortes American. Anacortes subscribers receive this publication as a “B” section to the main newspaper, complementing staff news coverage with lighter feature fare and event listings. Non-subscribers receive this portion of the paper as a standalone. It is produced by the Anacortes American staff and printed at the Skagit Publishing facility in Mount Vernon.
